Finding an outstanding marriage counselor, especially one who runs a Christian-based practice, isn’t always easy. That’s why I recommend starting with your pastor.

Since most pastors also have some training in marriage counseling, you may find that your pastoral staff offers marriage counseling as a service of your local church.

Alternatively, it’s likely that your pastor can refer you to a Christian marriage counselor in your area.

Please keep in mind that a professional counselor who is also a Christian is quite different from a Christian marriage counselor.

Some professionals will label their services as “Christian” so as to  seem more appealing to couples who are in search of Christian marriage therapy. However, they approach counseling from a professional point of view but not necessarily from a biblical point of view.

When searching for Christian counseling, choose only the best. Stop at nothing until you get the best service. Choose someone who considers your faith to be the foundation of their Christian counseling. This is crucial and of great help to couples with strong Christian faith.

Remember, there are many segments and divisions within Christianity. So be sure that the marriage therapist understands your particular religious persuasion, and, as much as possible, shares your values and priorities.

Therefore, the church you attend is a great starting place for your journey in finding the most effective Christian marriage therapy for you.

At times, you might be reluctant to seek marriage therapy from a marriage counselor or pastor you know because you prefer to keep the matter private between you and your spouse. But it’s likely that the people closest to you, and friends at church, already suspect that you are having marriage trouble.

Are you seeking Christian counseling? Then consider someone from the American Association of Christian Counselors. These are people who adhere to Christian standards. Though this is just one example, there are several other organizations that offer similar services; the choice is yours.

Here are some additional factors to consider when searching for Christian counseling:

  • Are you concerned about the gender of the marriage counselor?
  • Do you want counseling to include spiritual guidance and prayer?
  • Do you want a marriage counselor who agrees with your position concerning divorce, remarriage, marital roles, infidelity, and so on?

You may contact the counselor’s office and inquire about the above points to help guide you in making a good decision. The importance of discussing the same points with your spouse cannot be overemphasized.

Following these simple steps will better prepare you to find the most effective Christian marriage counselor for your particular situation.
