A Thanksgiving Reminder: You’re Not Married to a Perfect Person (And That’s Okay)

As we celebrate Thanksgiving, it’s easy to get caught up in the busyness:  planning meals, seeing family, traveling, hosting, and trying to make everything just right.

But in the middle of it all, we wanted to pause and offer you a simple reminder that feels especially fitting for this season of gratitude:

You’re not married to a perfect person. And guess what? Neither is your spouse.

We all know perfection is a myth… but that doesn’t always stop us from expecting it—from ourselves or from the person we love most.

Sometimes we hold our spouses to an impossible standard. Other times, we’re the ones trying to do everything right, afraid of falling short.

But what if we let go of that pressure — and leaned into gratitude instead?

This Thanksgiving, Choose Gratitude Over Perfection

Perfection won’t deepen your connection. But gratitude will.

So here’s a simple challenge for today (or any day, really):

  1. Think of one thing you’re truly thankful for about your spouse.
It can be something small, like their laugh, their morning coffee routine, or how they always remember to warm up the car for you.
Or something big, like their loyalty, strength, or how they’ve stood by you in hard seasons.
  2. Then, tell them.
Before the day is over, hold them close and share it.

This small act of appreciation can bring so much warmth and love into your relationship—not just today, but every day.

Gratitude Changes Everything

Thanksgiving is the perfect time to pause and really see the person standing beside you—not the perfect version you imagined, but the real, beautiful, imperfect spouse you chose.

Let that be enough. Let that be more than enough.

So from all of us here at Mad About Marriage, we’re wishing you a Thanksgiving full of love, laughter, and yes… great food! But more than that, we hope today brings you a deeper sense of gratitude for the person you share life with.

Happy Thanksgiving. 🧡
